I have to say I loved the banners that the
NY Ubuntu LoCo and the
UT Open Source Conference made to run at On-Disk.com so those two groups will each be getting 20 discs
So, it might seem obvious that the banner thing is a soft spot for me and I've decided to choose based on the
best banners submitted to run at On-Disk.com again this month.
The banner submission process will work just like it's out lined in the
official banner rotation post, but when you
email me, include a short snippet about the group submitting the banner so I'll know who to contact should your banner be one of the best.
Now here's the fun part.
Your banner could be for anything! You could use the impressions to advertise for an event your group is holding or just let the world know you're there with a link back to your home page. Your group could create a banner or banners for your favorite distros/applications and link to products in the On-Disk.com Catalog or out to the various project websites.
So gather your art teams and get started. You're getting free discs and free advertising - what do you have to loose?

In case you missed it on Twitter and Identi.ca the
discs offered up in June will be going to
Ubuntu Nicaragua.
Since my summer vacation has me well behind in my work I'm going to do things a little differently this time around and combine July with August but choose two user groups to get the discs when we announce the September give-a-way.
This time around we're going to be choosing based on the
best banners submitted to run at On-Disk.com.
The banner submission process will work just like it's out lined in the
official banner rotation post, but when you
email me, include a short snippet about the group submitting the banner so I'll know who to contact should your banner be one of the best.

I'm happy to announce that we're sending
May 2009's discs to a Linux User Group in Nicaragua. Yn1v's "
A non-event worked for us" was the best idea posted in May.
The June 2009 Discs will be given away based on re-tweets of this article. (yes we'll be tallying from Identi.ca too)
You can click the "
Retweet this article" link here and below to be considered for the discs.
To increase your chances, change "my LUG" to your groups name because when we tally the tweets we'll be counting based on user name or the name of the LUG. Just don't change the text too much or we won't be able to find your post and count it for you.
It might seem complicated, but if we see RT@YourUserName but it still says "my LUG" each one of those will count. If we see lots of individual user names but all have a specific LUG name in them, those will count too. But at the end of the month, it will be the largest number of mentions that takes the discs. So get together with your LUG members and decide how you want to maximize your chances.
Post your questions below if you have them, otherwise, get tweeting.

Here we are at the very first Groups.On-Disk.com
monthly disc give away!
While we already give some discs for Install fests, Launch Parties and other events, the Monthly disc give away will allow us to give even more. While we don't know what the response will be, only one group will receive discs. But don't be disappointed if you're not chosen this month. We'll do this again next month and while you're here, be sure you scan the rest of the site for other hidden gems you can use in your local user and community groups.
For the Month of May we will be choosing the recipient by the very best use of the "Best Practices" section of the Groups forum
What does that mean? Well it's fairly open but I'm looking for...
Extremely helpful posts in the 'Best Practices' section under
Worked for us and
Ideas needed. Posts that are helpful or generate a lot of useful replies will be more likely to catch my eye when choosing who gets the discs. (useful is the key word here folks, SPAM will be deleted)
To be in the running indicate that you'd like to be part of the disc give away by adding "May '09 Discs for $GroupName" in the body of the post.
We'll accept submissions until May 22, 2009 and we'll let everyone know who was chosen between the 25th and 29th.

Since we're just getting this website started, we haven't had an official free disc give-away yet, but we were able to send 20 pre-printed discs to the Florida Ubuntu LoCo group for their party on Saturday.
We only pre-printed the discs because there wasn't enough time to get burned discs out to them with the Ubuntu 9.04 Release on Thursday and shipping times to Florida from Rochester NY. So the solution that presented itself was to pre-print discs and allow the guys in Florida to burn once the ISO was released.
If you'd like to see the discs....
dan trevino just sent a notice to your attention (an '@-reply') on
Identi.ca.
The notice is here:
http://identi.ca/notice/3706360
It reads:
Some pics of the sweet CDs that On-Disk sent us:

PS, I'm just getting my tweet stream set up for Identi.ca too. If you'd like to follow along, you can catch me at

We realize that there may be a lot more asks for
Free discs than we can supply.
So if you can't wait for your name to come up, simply contact
Todd,
Brian or
me and let us know what's on your mind. Under certain circumstances we can give a discount greater than what's listed in the
On-Disk.com Catalog.
